I Wake Up Screaming (1941)
[Hot Spot]

Director: H Bruce Humberstone
Starring: Betty Grable, Victor Mature, Carole Landis
Synopsis:
A sports promoter who turned a waitress into a model is accused of her murder.
Impressions:
This was a decent murder mystery. Not outstanding, but I didn't see the twist coming, so I'll give them that. I particularly liked Laird Cornell as Detective Cornell. He's got good screen presence being such a big guy and the character is interesting for being morally grey, feeling more like a mob heavy than a cop. There also everyone's favorite gunsel Elisha Cook Jr. as the switchboard operator (who may or may not be plot significant). It seemed a bit odd to me that "Over the Rainbow" was used as the leitmotif for Betty Grable's character. I found it a little incongruous with the film and bit of lazy scoring. As I said, it's not so great that you need to seek it out, but you won't particularly regret seeing it either.
