In a Lonely Place (1950)

Director: Nicholas Ray
Starring: Humphrey Bogart, Gloria Grahame, Frank Lovejoy
Synopsis:
A short-tempered and cynical screenwriter finds himself implicated in a murder but is cleared by a neighbor, who he then gets involved with.
Impressions:
Film noir isn't just hard-boiled private eyes and this movie is a first-rate example of that. Humphrey Bogart plays a fairly similar character type to what he's known for, only this film highlights how maladjusted a person like that would be. It's a very tense movie as suspicions ramp up in spite of what you think you know. I believe my expectations were subverted at least twice before the movie's close. It apparently wasn't all that well-received at the time but was later vindicated by history. If you like film noir at all, you definitely need to give this one a watch.
