Interviews with Monster Girls (2017)
[δΊδΊΊ(γγ)γ‘γγγ―θͺγγγ]
Volume 5

Author/Artist: Petos
Publisher: Young Manga KC
Synopsis:
Takahashi-sensei runs an experiment with Yuki to see if she can control her powers.
Story/Characters:
More than what we actually learn about Yuki's powers, the experiment chapter is interesting for how it builds on observations and such that have been built up to this point. Next we have Hikari and Yuki trying to find ways to beat the heat, as summer isn't great for a vampire and a yuki onna. This then leads us to a two-parter at the pool. It is amusing how Satou-sensei tries to take advantage of the situation, and the second half has some interesting speculation on Takahashi-sensei's part when it comes to dullahans and water. Next we have Yuki at Hikari's for her first play date and we get to meet Hikari's mom Midori, a decent look at what a grownup Hikari is going to be like.
The last two chapters introduce us to a new character, Youko Takahashi, a college student who is haunted (for lack of a better term) by a zashiki warashi, a kind of child spirit that is supposed to bring good luck to houses where they appear. These two will later star in the spinoff series Occult-chan wa Katarenai, which ran after this series ended. For the time being, we explore their relationship and how Zashiko affects Youko's life.
Art:
There are a few standout moments in this volume such as Machi's ghost story and her first view underwater. There are a lot of antics with Youko and Zashiko which are pretty cute.
Other:
We have a bonus chapter of Ugaki and Kurtz with anpan. In case you didn't know, in Japan anpan is stereotypical stakeout food, much like you'd have cops with donuts in the US.
Conclusion:
We get a nice helping of summer fun this volume and then kick off a nice little mini-arc with some new characters (who will be integrated with the main cast in the next volume). It's nothing too hard-hitting either dramatically or comedically, but there's a nice coziness to it, and if you're a fan of the series, you'll enjoy yourself. I say add it to your collection.
