Too Many Losing Heroines! - Volume 3 (2024)

Author: Takibi Amamori
Artist: Itachi
Original Character Design: Imigimuru
Publisher: Ura Sunday Comics

Synopsis:
As rumors start floating around school that Nukumizu and Yanami are dating, he tries protect her image, but is he doing more harm than good?

Story/Characters:
Nukumizu was perhaps lacking in awareness that his little lunch dates with Yanami were going unnoticed or that anyone wouldn't start drawing conclusions about how often the two of them can be found together. It doesn't help that Yanami seems to be even more lacking in awareness in that regard, but it is funny how she gets annoyed at him for ignoring her when he was trying to construct the image that they aren't as close as they are. He takes it a step farther by trying to end things by cancelling her debt to him, but this doesn't go so well either. Then in comes Yanami's old flame (I say "old flame" even though the romantic bit was one-sided on Yanami's part) with a well-meaning but very wrong idea about the situation. What follows is an interesting exchange about the nature of relationships where unrequited love is involved. Sousuke is by no means the bad guy here but Nukumizu's interpretation of what he's trying to do might not occur to some people. The way Yanami gets involved in all this is hilarious too, by the way. A character with her particularly bent nature really livens up a scene like this.

We once again pick up the pieces and apply some duct tape and rubber cement to hold things together in a shape that may not quite be the same as before, it may not hold up, but it'll get us by for now. Yanami bounces right back as she's known to do and just when things look like they're settled for a bit, we get another big happening for our cliffhanger. These volumes really are paced just right for this sort of thing, aren't they?

Art:
There are some really nice scenes of genuine emotion and true to the tone of the series, there often juxtaposed with something wacky either right before or right after. You've got zombie secretary Yumeko making an appearance for a one-scene wonder and some extra Lemon fanservice if that's the sort of thing that makes you happy.

Other:
The color insert once again has the cover image and a two-page spread, this time a big montage poster of the cast. Under the dust over are three 4-koma with Yanami being Yanami.

Conclusion:
If you're like me, you're on the fence about the final disposition of Nukumizu and Yanami's relationship, both in terms of what would be satisfying as the reader and what would be best for the characters themselves, and while this volume doesn't necessarily move towards the endgame, it represents an important step along the way. This is a different sort of conflict and resolution than we saw in the previous volume, but I like how it was handled all the same, especially because it presented me with a perspective I hadn't considered before in this sort of situation. Anyway, I continue to be quite pleased with what's being delivered and would happily recommend this for your collection.
