Synopsis:
In an alternate timeline where Zeon won the One-Year War, a young Newtype's abilities awaken when she encounters an experimental Gundam.
Impressions:
Although I've seen a fair bit of Gundam material, I wouldn't call myself a super fan of the franchise. However, hearng that this was going to be an alternate timeline of the original series and that Studio Khara was going to be involved, I was intrigued and so I decided to check it out. If you're an old-school fan, this "what-if" scenario is interesting. I like how it starts mostly ground-level with the underbelly of Side 6 before we get to the higher-level political intrigue with the Zabis vying for control and other factions with competing agendas get tossed into the mix as well. The exploration of Newtype abilities is also something I enjoyed. You'll see a lot of familiar themes, and it plays nicely as a love letter to the franchise. The mech battles are lovingly rendered and while I appreciate the fidelity to original character designs, you might find the original characters clash a bit, but that's a minor quibble. I generally liked the core trio of Machu, Nyaan and Shuji, but I felt their story got swallowed up a bit as we transtion to the higher-level conflict. All told, I enjoyed this and would recommend giving this a watch.
